F R E C K L E S a film by Denise Papas Meechan
I would just like to start out by saying I think this short is just spectacular. This film is so deserving of being accepted into the CANNES Short Film Corner. Denise Papas Meechan pulls no punches with this one right out of the gate.I think what really hits home with me is i have known people that are really close to relating with out main character, Jenn Halweil, who plays" L I Z Z I E ”. She, despite having extreme low self esteem,is really quite beautiful. Being a bit of a loner myself throughout the years, i can see how someone could get caught up in an inner world of self loathing and rage, like our "lizzie" has done all these years. You kind of get the feeling that even though she blames her freckles for all her issues, if she didn't have them, she would find another reason or object to blame everything on.
This is a real disturbing look into the soul of someone who has felt the pressures of our modern day society. Our unrealistic visions of how people should look, act, and feel toward one another. We see it happen at an early age. We all know that children in school can be relentless and ruthless when someone has a "flaw" or some sort of disability. But i digress.....
Freckles is not your typical horror film but make no mistake it is no less disturbing in nature as it deals with the ultimate villain, our inner self. Well done Denise,Well done indeed...
